Letter grade and the numerical equivalents used for this calculator
Most schools, colleges, and universities in the United States use the letters above to grade students, though E is sometimes used instead of F. However, grading systems differ in terms of what constitutes an A or B, and some do not include grades like an A+ or a B-. Others might assign more weight to certain courses, and thus any grade earned in the course will have a greater impact on overall GPA. As shown in the examples below, the calculator can account for this based on the number of credits attributed to a course, where credit is the “weighting” of the course.
Examples
Course | Credit | Score | Grade Points |
---|---|---|---|
Math | 4 | A+ | 4 x 4.3 = 17.2 |
Physics | 2 | B | 2 x 3 = 6 |
English | 3 | A | 3 x 4 = 12 |
Total | 9 | NA | 35.2 |
GPA | 35.2 / 9 = 3.91 |
Course | Credit | Score | Grade Points |
---|---|---|---|
Biology | 4 | 3 | 4 x 3 = 12 |
Chemistry | 3 | 2 | 3 x 2 = 6 |
Chemistry Lab | 2 | 4 | 2 x 4 = 8 |
Total | 9 | NA | 26 |
GPA | 26 / 9 = 2.89 |

Grade point averages are now a big deal for college students and their worried parents. A GPA is easy to calculate once you understand that it is just an average of values. To calculate an average, add all of the values in a table or on a scale and divide the total by the total number of values given. The tricky part about a grade point average is that it includes letter grades as well as numbers and decimals. So, before you can calculate a GPA, prepare for some conversion work! Do you want to know how to compute GPA? Then follow the instructions.

Calculation:
The first thing you do in order to calculate a GPA is to convert each of your final grades into the right decimal-placed number. Here’s a simple scale for doing this:
Grade | Percentile | GPA |
---|---|---|
A+ | 97-100 | 4.0 |
A | 93-96 | 4.0 |
A- | 90-92 | 3.7 |
B+ | 87-89 | 3.3 |
B | 83-86 | 3.0 |
B- | 80-82 | 2.7 |
C+ | 77-79 | 2.3 |
C | 73-76 | 2.0 |
C- | 70-72 | 1.7 |
D+ | 67-69 | 1.3 |
D | 65-66 | 1.0 |
F | Below 65 | 0.0 |
Table-1
According to this table, compare the grades on your report and determine where you stand. Here’s a case for you to easily understand:
Case Example for how to calculate GPA (i):
Let us consider the following table as your final result in a grade/percent class assessment:
Course Name | Percentage |
---|---|
English | 90 |
Maths | 88 |
Physics | 75 |
Chemistry | 87 |
Geography | 91 |
History | 85 |
Computer Studies | 72 |
Economics | 96 |
Now following one simple instruction: Compare these results with Table-1.
According to the reference table, your grade point average looks something like this:
Course Name | Percentage | Grade | GPA |
---|---|---|---|
English | 90 | A- | 3.7 |
Maths | 88 | B+ | 3.3 |
Physics | 75 | C | 2.0 |
Chemistry | 87 | B+ | 3.3 |
Geography | 91 | A- | 3.7 |
History | 85 | B | 3.0 |
Computer Studies | 72 | C- | 1.7 |
Economics | 96 | A | 4.0 |
If you haven’t noticed already, I have added two extra columns for ‘Grade’ and ‘GPA’ to easily see the complete grade point system for determining the GPA. The final step involves taking average of given values that would help us determine how you’ve scored. Let’s see:
Calculating Average(ii)
In principle, the average of any group of numbers is the sum of all numbers, divided by the total number of values present in the group. Mathematically,
Average = Total sum of all values / Total number of all values
Now if we put all required values into this formula, the Cumulative Grade Point Average or CGPA can be easily calculated. Let’s insert your grade values and find out how you’ve done:
Average = 3.7+ 3.3+ 2.0+ 3.3 +3.7 +3.0 +1.7 + 4.0 / 8
Average = 24.7 / 8
Average = 3.0875
This formula determines the grade point average out of 4.0. In other cases, sometimes you have to determine your GPA and CGPA based on the number of course credits you are enrolled in. To that effect, your report looks something like this:
Grade Point Average with Credits(iii)
Course Name | Percentage | Credits | Grade | GPA |
---|---|---|---|---|
English | 90 | 1 | A- | 3.7 |
Maths | 88 | 2 | B+ | 3.3 |
Physics | 75 | 2 | C | 2.0 |
Chemistry | 87 | 4 | B+ | 3.3 |
Geography | 91 | 1 | A- | 3.7 |
History | 85 | 1 | B | 3.0 |
Computer Studies | 72 | 2 | C- | 1.7 |
Economics | 96 | 2 | A | 4.0 |
15 | 24.7 |
In this case:
CGPA = Total Sum of (GPA * Credits) / Total Number of credits
= 3.7+ 6.6 + 4.0 + 13.2 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 3.4 + 8.0 / 15
CGPA = 3.0333
We see the difference isn’t much, but in both cases the result is 98% to the same level of accuracy. In this way, we can calculate our grade point averages without the hassle of waiting for the result to come out on a later date!
